Sealing Ponds

Sparying a pond with Liquid Rubber
  • The process is pretty straight forward. In this case we are going to assume its concrete. First let’s start with the clean up. 

  • Make sure your pond is clean and dry and make sure there isn’t any oil, grease or organic matter on the area or areas you wish to fix. 

  • Now its clean It’s time to get out the rubber, now if you’re looking to just repair just one spot or the whole pond it’s basically the same process.

  • Start by focusing on the possible problem areas those will be any cracks, joints or penetrations.

  • Once identified paint a thick layer of Liquid Rubber High Build on those spots, Followed by a layer of Geofabric, it's really important that you make sure you don’t Leave any Bubbles or winkles in the fabric for water to escape along. you want it to be smooth and flat so cut and fold it like your making origami the better it looks the better it should seal.

  • Its okay to layer over layer to cover up wrinkles but just remember if its really thick, it will take longer to dry.

  • Sometimes if your looking to put stones or other objects in there after your finished its strongly advised that you use some Geofabric over those areas to protect the rubber.

  • In some cases we find it better to just layer the whole pond with rubber and Geofabric and paint it all in (See photos Below) this will use a lot more rubber but will also be the strongest way to seal it as the fabric will take a lot of wear and tear without damaging the rubber. 

  • After this you want to paint the Geofabric in and a small area around it so all has a large area to lock to the ground and won’t come off and it will create a watertight seal and if your painting the whole pond just fill in all the area with Rubber after that it’s just a matter of leaving to dry and filling with water.

  • A generic pond should be painted with an average thickness of 2-3 mm. you can work out the Product usage from our Application information

  • Allow for 4L per M2 if your using the geofabric over entire area or just 3L Per M2 if painting it with rubber only

  • You should also use Heavy Duty geofabric on wearable and vulnerable areas as it can be used for strengthening the membrane In places like under a pump that may vibrate or heavy rocks that could damage the membrane.

  • Using a 230mm Roller and dipping directly into the bucket can make things quicker and easier.

  • When painting geofabric start from the middle and brush out towards the edge so to stop the fabric pulling up with the brush.

  • Bubbling can be a common problem when coating concrete due to all the capillaries in the concrete holding air. it is always advisable to use a water based sealer for best results or alternately you can use some Liquid Rubber High Build (Instant Set works better) and paint it very thin with a roller and work it into the concrete to fill up all those capillaries leave to dry before applying a main coat ( this can be done more than once to be safe)
